Abstract
This research explores the potential usefulness of the oxygen uptake rate (OUR) of an activated sludge to determine the microbial viability and predict effluent quality for various types of substrates and operating conditions. Some observations which can be made are as follows: OUR reflects the extent of microbial activity, and the SPOUR (specific OUR) can be related to the equilibrium substrate concentration similar to the classical Michaelis-Menten equation; a correlation exists between the SPOUR of mixed liquor of the aeration tank and the final effluent soluble COD concentrations; there appears to be a narrow range for the ratio of mixed liquor SPOUR to return sludge SPOUR, at which a satisfactory effluent quality results; and the SPOUR of mixed liquor can be used to predict the final effluent soluble COD concentrations during a transient loading condition.
