Abstract
The seven papers in this special section were presented at a workshop held in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, in June 1991, and illustrate the contribution of this technique to improving the efficiency, reliability or applicability of tree breeding programmes. They are titled: morphophysiological traits as markers for the early selection of conifer genetic families; conifer wood quality and marker-aided selection - a case study; using marker-aided selection to improve tree growth response to abiotic stress; marker-aided selection in a backcross breeding programme for resistance to chestnut blight Cryphonectria parasitica in the American chestnut Castanea dentata; potential applications of molecular markers for genetic analysis of host-pathogen systems in forest trees; marker-aided selection and propagation systems in trees - advantages of cloning for studying quantitative inheritance; and limitations of molecular-marker-aided selection in forest tree breeding. -J.W.Cooper
