Abstract

We have performed magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity measurements on Ca2+xY2-xCu5O10 (x = O and 0.75), which have chains of edge-shared CuO4 tetragons. It was found that Ca2Y2Cu5O10 shows a magnetic transition around 29 K. The high transition temperature and the large magnetic entropy below the transition temperature indicate that the inter-chain interaction is rather large. The transition temperature is decreased in the Ca-rich sample probably due to the holes which are coupled with the copper spins.
