Abstract

Mossbauer effect spectroscopy (MES) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used to study quenched and partitioned (Q&P) rmcrostructures in a 038C-l.54Mn-l.48Si wt. pet. (1.71C-1.52Mn-2.86Si at. pet.) steel, with an emphasis on characterizing transition carbides and retained austemte. Specimens were quenched to 225 or 250°C and partitioned at 400°C for times ranging from 10 to 300 s. The presence of n-carbides was confirmed by TEM and the quantities were measured by MES. The amounts of η-carbide ranged from 1.5 to 2.3 at. pet. and increased with partitioning time, accounting for a substantial portion (-27 to 41 pet.) of the total bulk carbon content of the steel. The amount (5.0 at. pet.) of η-carbide that formed after quenching and tempering (Q&T) at 400°C for 300 s was significantly greater than following partitioning at 400°C for 300 s (2.3 at. pet.), indicating that carbon partitioning from martensite to austemte competes with η-carbide formation dunng Q&P.
