N2 - A technique based on liquid scintillator with wavelength-shifting fibre readout is interesting for large-mass neutrino detectors. In this paper, we present results obtained with a laboratory prototype assembled at CERN. Mixtures made of economical chemical components were compared to commercial liquid scintillators. The light yield was also studied as a function of fibre diameter, fibre position, and surface quality of the container.
