Abstract

The recoil-distance method has been used in conjunction with the 51V( alpha ,n) and 50Ti( alpha ,n) reactions to investigate the lifetimes of four levels in 54Mn and four in 53Cr. The mean lives obtained are as follows: 53Cr (E x=1006 keV), tau <2.5 ps; 53Cr (Ex=1537 keV), tau =33.2+or-1.6 ps; 53Cr (Ex=2173 keV), tau =13.9+or-1.1 ps;53Cr (Ex=2707 keV), tau =3.4+or-1.4 ps; 54Mn (Ex=156 keV), tau =302+or-24 ps; 54Mn (Ex=368 keV), tau =8.9+or-1.9 ps;54Mn (Ex=408 keV), tau=2.7+or-0.8 ps; 54Mn (1073 keV), tau =321+or-13 ps. In addition, the oppler-shift attenuation method has been used to investigate ten lifetimes in 53Cr and fourteen in 54Mn. The results extracted are discussed, and compared with previous experiments and with theoretical predictions.
