Large scale flow patterns and the rapid intensification of western north Pacific tropical cyclones

Research output: Contribution to conferencePaperpeer-review

Abstract

The characteristic features of flow patterns and rapid intensification of western North Pacific tropical cyclones are described. The flow patterns are characterized by meridional cyclonic shear of zonal wind and/or confluence of monsoon westerlies and trade easterlies. JTWC best track data is used to identify 35kt intensity storms which intensify by 30kts or more in 24hr period and represents top 12% of intensification rates. The results show that most rapid intensifying cases are dominantly associated with confluence patterns as opposed to more common shear line and eastern pattern.
