Abstract

Inelastic neutron scattering spectra from three uranium crystalline phases produced phonon density-of-states curves within the temperature range 50 to 1213 K. The alpha phase showed large thermal softening. Vibrational power spectrum was analyzed and revealed the such softening originated with the softening of the harmonic solid. This phonon softening was opposed to the vibrations in harmonic potentials.
