Abstract

The strength of electron-phonon coupling in atomically uniform films of Ag on Fe was determined by angle-resolved photoemission from quantum well states. Suppression of electron-phonon coupling at surfaces appeared to be a general phenomenon for deeply bound states. It was found that certain shallow surface states can penetrate the surface barrier significantly and couple more strongly to phonons via a large crystal potential.
