Abstract
A new type of composite, which consists of a reinforcement phase plus a matrix composed of alternate thin layers of two different materials, has been conceived. Layered structures are known to enhance mechanical toughness and thus, their use as the matrix, along with the reinforcement phase, should enhance the toughness of the overall composite. We have successfully fabricated such a composite using the forced flow-thermal gradient CVI process. Carbon fibrous preforms and SiC particulate preforms were infiltrated with alternate layers of C and SiC having thicknesses of 0.01 to 0.5 μm.
