Abstract
In this report the instructions for service life design of facades and roof coverings in compliance with ISO 15686-1 have been presented. The report covers facades made of concrete, masonry, timber and steel plate and roof coverings made of bitumen membrane, steel plate and concrete tiles. In some respects the instructions are still defective. Some examples to clarify the practical calculation have been included. The method based on ISO 15686-1 is meant for practical service life design of structures. The method is known as the factor method, as the effects of material quality, structural design, work execution, indoors and outdoors environment, in use conditions and maintenance level on service life are taken into account by special factors. The estimated service life is obtained by multiplying the reference service life by these factors. All available sources and means have been utilized in the determination of service life factors. In some cases empirical data has been sufficiently available to allow a direct determination of factors. In other cases experimental and calculational methods have been used in the process of producing factors, as there has been only a limited amount of empirical service life data available. The maximum allowable degradation corresponding to service life has been defined in each case. In the first chapters the basics of service life design according to ISO 15686-1 are presented briefly. At the end of the report other methods of service life design and methods for acquisition of basic service life data are introduced.
