Abstract
This chapter serves as an introduction to the book, which focuses on the revolutionary field of solid-state metal additive manufacturing. Various cutting-edge technologies are discussed, including cold spray additive manufacturing, additive friction stir deposition, ultrasonic additive manufacturing, and sintering-based processes like binder jetting and material extrusion-enabled metal additive manufacturing. The chapter first provides an overview and history of metal additive manufacturing, then discusses different bonding mechanisms, and finally delves into the promise and limitations of nonbeam-based, solid-state metal additive manufacturing methods, which are implemented either via deformation-based or sintering-based routes. Additionally, this chapter outlines the organization of the book, offering a glimpse of the topics to be covered in all the following chapters.
