Abstract

(Formula presented)-site substitution effects on the magnetic and lattice structure have been investigated for bilayer manganites, (Formula presented), without changing the (Formula presented)-electron concentration (Formula presented). The ferromagnetic metallic (FM) phase of the parent (Formula presented) (Formula presented) K) is suppressed by Nd doping (Formula presented), and a paramagnetic insulating (PI) state appears above (Formula presented). The FM phase is suppressed also by Ca doping (Formula presented), but a layered-type antiferromagnetic (A-AF) structure appears above (Formula presented). We have investigated the stability of the (Formula presented) (or (Formula presented) orbital by Madelung potential calculation based on the structural data, and have found that orbital polarization governs the magnetic structure in bilayer manganites.
