Abstract
A multi-technique study of the magnetisation profile in a Pd/Co/Pd/Au sandwich structure is presented. Layer thicknesses were determined by chemical analysis, X-ray reflection and Polarised Neutron Specular Reflection (PNSR). All methods give the same structure within experimental error. The saturation magnetisation, as measured by magnetometry was observed to be around 10% higher than expected from the Co thickness. The PNSR measurements indicate that the additional moment is due either to an induced magnetic moment of the Pd of 0.4μB in a 5 Å thick layer at each Co/Pd interface or an enhanced magnetic moment per Co atom of 1.84μB.
