Abstract

We have measured the inelastic neutron scattering from gaseous hydrogen at a temperature of 18 K using neutrons with a nominal incident energy of 504 meV. The observed scattering exhibits peaks corresponding to excitations from the ground rotational state to final states of odd rotational quantum number. We find excellent agreement between the relative intensities of these peaks and a quantum mechanical calculation.
