Abstract

In this paper the current methods for control and in situ monitoring of radiation enhanced, aqueous corrosion of solid neutron targets or structural materials are described. Using floating, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy the corrosion rates of aluminum, copper, stainless steel in the flow loop of a water target irradiated by a high energy proton beam have been measured. During a three month period of irradiation the increases of several orders of magnitude in the water conductivity and the corrosion rates have been observed. The planning experiments on measuring the corrosion rates of tungsten, tantalum and various steels are also briefly described.
