Abstract

The ORIGEN module of SCALE has been updated with a Chebyshev Rational Approximation Method (CRAM) depletion solver. To allow the new solver to model external feed, a method has been developed for including a source term with polynomial time dependency to CRAM. It is also shown that while the accuracy of CRAM is only weakly affected by step lengths, it improves greatly over subsequent steps with equal lengths and coefficient matrices. An internal substepping method that allows this behavior to be efficiently exploited to improve the accuracy of CRAM is presented. In addition to being able to handle time-dependent feed rates and adjoint calculations, the new CRAM solver is generally faster and, even without substeps, more accurate than the original depletion solver of ORIGEN.
