Abstract

Despite the fast development of building information modeling (BIM) and its associated benefits, the adoption of BIM in stormwater drainage projects is still at its early stage. In this paper, the latest drainage design modeling standards and practices of 10 state departments of transportation in the US were reviewed. Furthermore, the interoperability between drainage models and industry foundation classes (IFC) - the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standard for BIM was studied. It was found that although the state-of-the-art drainage modeling software can support interoperability with IFC, there are research gaps to be addressed to achieve seamless interoperability such as the lack of distinction in IFC entities for representing different drainage components (e.g., inlet, conduit, etc.). Solutions to fill the gaps were proposed such as consistent and comprehensive modeling standards/protocols and automated classification for drainage components leveraging invariant signatures, to support the life-cycle management of transportation infrastructure projects with BIM.
