Abstract
This paper reports results of a collaborative effort to identify and characterize organic pollutants in drinking waters from areas of endemic goiter. We have previously reported research results which support the hypothesis that there is a relationship between sources of drinking water and goiter prevalence. Because of this possible relationship, we also summarize our previous research identifying goitrogens in aqueous waste streams of coal-processing plants. In the future, these aqueous waste streams may pollute drinking water sources from areas contiguous to such plants.
