Abstract
The oxidation kinetics of ODS-Fe3Al alloys have been studied under temperature cycling conditions at 1000-1300°C for up to 5,000 hours, or until breakaway oxidation occurred. Comparisons were made with commercial ODS-FeCrAl alloys. The best Fe3Al-based alloys oxidized isothermally at the same rate of the commercial ODS-FeCrAls. Under thermal cycling conditions, the oxidation rate of ODS-Fe3Al was faster than that of the best ODS-FeCrAl as a result of differences in scale spallation characteristics. Comparison of the scale morphologies indicated differences between ODS-Fe3Al and the ODS-FeCrAls. Especially notable was the greater tendency of the ODS-Fe3Al alloy to form interfacial voids.
