Abstract

High β with good confinement quality under stationary conditions was described by conducting various experiments in the DIII-D tokamak. It was assumed that the presence of low n tearing modes was inconsistent with high performance operation. The extrapolation of the sawtooth-limited plasmas depended on understanding the role of fast ions in the sawtooth dynamics. The ratio of fast ions stored energy to thermal stored energy in International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) was higher than DIII-D.
