Abstract

We discuss the demonstration of soft x-ray lasers with essentially full spatial and temporal coherence at wavelengths down to 13.2 nm by high harmonic seeding of soft x-ray plasma amplifiers created by irradiation of solid targets. These lasers are demonstrated to produce the shortest pulses obtained to date from plasma-based soft x-ray lasers. A pulse duration of 1.13 ± 0.47 ps was measured for a seeded Ne-like Ti plasma amplifier operating at 32.6 nm using an ultrafast streak camera.
