Abstract

The performance demands for parts in aircraft engines require the utilization of materials that maintain their mechanical properties even when operating at high temperatures. Therefore, in these applications, there is a need to machine difficult-to-cut materials such as nickel and titanium alloys. In most cases, hole-making operations for aerospace parts are highly demanding, with significant impact on unit cost, quality, and productivity. This study evaluates the feasibility of replacing conventional drilling operations in Inconel 718 with hole-making operations based on helical milling and applying ball-nose end mills. Based on hole dimensional tolerance and surface roughness, the proposed helical milling approach was successful.
