Abstract

In this work, a preliminary thermal model has been developed for friction stir welding (FSW). This is predominately an analytical model, considering only heat generated at the tool shoulder, and how that heat is conducted into the plate. Results of the model are presented, and correlations made with actual friction stir welds. Results of these analyses are used to develop preliminary mechanisms of heating and bonding for the FSW process.
