Abstract
A system of H α detectors was designed for neutral hydrogen monitoring on Helically Symmetric Experiment (HSX). The H α detector system was composed of 15 detectors and the first array known as the poloidal array was composed of nine detectors on the flame array at the tear-drop shaped cross section of the machine. A set of seven detectors was located toroidally around the machine to monitor. Neutral gas modeling allows for the estimation of the density of atomic and molecular hydrogen from the H α emission, which are used for particle transport and flow damping studies.
