Abstract

Small amounts of additives of MnO2 and SiO2 derived by a sol-gel reaction caused two ferrimagnetic materials, Y2Gd1Fe5O12 and Li0.3Zn0.4Fe2.3O4 to have different microstructural characteristics. The chemical additives were thought to act as a grain growth inhibitor by segregating Si-rich precipitates along the grain boundaries in the case of Y2Gd1Fe5O12, whereas the same additives were proven to assist grain growth by forming a Si- and Fe-rich glassy phase at the grain boundaries for Li0.3Zn0.4Fe2.3O4. Quantitative analysis regarding the behavior of grain growth supported the observed microstructural changes.
