Research output: Contribution to journalReview articlepeer-review

Abstract

This study explores the importance of access to a reliable, safe, and environmentally friendly transportation system as a crucial first step in the transformation of the transportation industry for all users. The ability to access vital services such as healthcare, education, work opportunities, and various social, civic, and cultural activities is often dependent on having access to comfortable, reliable, and safe transportation. While transportation planning and design are traditionally considered "gender-neutral,"acknowledging and addressing gender distinctions is crucial. Through an extensive review of the current literature across the transportation field, this study identifies the differences in gender equity measurements globally, filling the gap in the current literature. Moreover, stemming from this review, a framework was developed to facilitate the quantification of gender equity and delineate steps for its implementation in planning and design projects. This study provides an overview of the necessary data and methodologies required to quantify gender inequities in transportation planning and design projects. This comprehensive approach assists transportation professionals and policymakers in understanding and addressing gender concerns, ultimately eliminating gender disparities and fostering the creation of an equitable transportation system.
