title = "Fragmentation of high energy16O beam in carbon and polymer materials: Comparisons between data and model",
abstract = "Experiments for measuring shielding properties for galactic cosmic rays (GCR) of materials containing predominantly low atomic mass have been conducted at the NASA Space Radiation Laboratory (NSRL) using high-energy 16O beams [1]. Our work compares the experimental data on particle fluence as a function of charge and Event Averaged LET obtained with 1 GeV/Nucleon and 600 McV/Nuclcon 16O beams incident on various candidate materials to the predictions of Monte Carlo Transport Models. One model is the High Energy Transport Code (HETC-HEDS) [3], which is a 3-D code, and the second is BBFRAO, a 1-D Code [2]. We present preliminary results, which show that of the materials analyzed, the low density carbon foam and the carbon fiber monolith, each infiltrated with PE, were next most effective in shielding to the PE reference material.",
