Abstract

A procedure was developed to prepare test specimens of porous cordierite to determine the fracture toughness of this material by the double-torsion test method. 300-μm thick test specimens were obtained from the walls of diesel particulate filters through a sequence of dry cutting/grinding operations using diamond-impregnated wheels. The fracture toughness of porous cordierite was found to be 0.46 ± 0.03 MPa√m and it was found that the fracture process was strongly influenced by the microstructure of the material. The procedures for test specimen preparation and fracture toughness testing are discussed in detail.
