Abstract
Under negative ion chemical ionization conditions, fluorene yields an anion at [M + 14] mass units. This species has been determined to correspond to [M + O − 2H]−, with the loss of two hydrogen atoms at the C‐9 position and addition of oxygen to form a structure similar to 9‐fluorenone.
