Abstract

High-energy γ-rays from the decay of the giant dipole resonance built on excited states were measured in coincidence with fission for the 32S + naiW, 208Pb reactions. Both the γ-ray multiplicity and the γ-fission angular correlation were determined; the latter quantity is sensitive to the deformation of the fissioning nucleus. This sensitivity has been used in order to estimate the breakdown of dynamical fission time τf into its pre-τpre and post-saddle τpost components. A statistical model analysis, using a version of CASCADE modified to include pre-and post-saddle delay times in order to simulate the effects of dynamics, can reproduce the data with τpre ≈ 10 × 10-21 s and τpost ≈ 20 × 10-21 s for a dynamical fission time τf ≈ 30 × 10-21 s.
