Fighting chatter with nonproportional spacing

Research output: Contribution to specialist publicationArticle

Abstract

One way of dealing with the problem of chatter in cutters is to measure the dynamic characteristics of the machining system. These measurements need to be used to calculate the stability lobe diagram and select cutting conditions in the stable region. An alternative strategy to deal with this problem is to disturb the waviness-regeneration mechanism by changing the spacing between the cutter's teeth. A tool with nonproportional spacing can achieve a higher stable axial DOC in comparison with a tool having proportional spacing. The effective feed per revolution of the tool needs to be reduced, and matched by an increased axial DOC to break even. The feed needs to be reduced from the proportionally spaced case in the ratio of the proportional space to the maximum space.
