Abstract

This paper will describe the methods and results of a set of experiments that were designed to measure the loads exerted on vertical shoring systems that are used in the construction of reinforced concrete buildings. Vertical and lateral loads were measured using in-line multi-axis load cells at rates that were capable of capturing dynamic events, as well as longer-duration static loadings. Data were taken at field sites during pours, curing, form removal and routine construction activity. In addition, a 1/3 scale wooden multi-story model was tested to examine more carefully the mechanics of load distribution and deflection in shoring systems. The model tests include studies of uplift, slightly uneven length shoring columns, slab stiffness, and soft footings on the distribution of loads within a shoring system.
