Abstract
A significant portion of the civil infrastructure in the United States is in need of serious repair. Tighter federal, state and local budgets require that the life of these structures be prolonged and that maintenance costs be reduced. Key to achieving these goals is the development of smart structures which are capable of accurately monitoring the health and integrity of structures. One promising approach is the embedding of fiber optic sensors in the structures which can reveal a building's structural integrity and can be remotely interrogated, allowing a building inspector to check on the health of numerous structures from a central location. The advantages of using this technology are discussed.
