Abstract

Enhancing the accident tolerance of Light Water Reactor fuels is a primary goal of the Department of Energy Office of Nuclear Energy (NE). Under the direction of NE, the Fuel Cycle R&D Program is striving to develop new fuels that provide improved behavior under design-basis accident and severe-accident conditions while maintaining performance under normal operating conditions. Prospective advanced accident tolerant UN-USi fuel forms are being studied at the Los Alamos National Laboratory. Companion work presented at this forum will discuss thermophysical properties and oxidation behavior of USi compounds and presented here are the results of a recent effort to fabricate and characterize UN-U3Si5 and fuel that will undergo irradiation testing in the Advanced Test Reactor in Idaho.
