Abstract

The electronic structure and magnetic properties of Gd and Gd5 (Si2 Ge2) systems were studied using the band structure approach. Multiple-scattering formalism of exchange coupling calculation was implemented and Curie temperature was calculated in pure Gd. The decrease of exchange coupling in Gd5 (Si2 Ge2) through structural transformation leads to first-order magnetostructural phase transition with large value of |∂H∂T| and giant magnetocaloric effect.
