Abstract

The Singrauli region, which produces 10% of India's electric power, has experienced rapid industrialization and urbanization over the last 30 years. Along with this growth has come environmental degradation in terms of coal cycle and industrial pollution, displacement of populations, housing and occupational hazards, related health effects, and land degradation. Much of this change has been driven demand for energy and other resources from urban and industrialized areas outside the region. Recently, the area has been the focus of several efforts to address its environmental problems. The profile summarizes the state of environmental quality and risks in the municipal area, examines interactions between environmental status and urban economic development, and describes the institutional setting for environmental management.
