Abstract

The oxidation behavior of iron aluminides was investigated in various environments at 900 to 1200°C. The effect of water vapor on total specimen mass gain was minimal. At 1000 and 1100°C, the mass gain of Fe-28at.%Al-5Cr without Zr was a factor of 2 or more higher in air than in oxygen or Ar-20%O2. Nitride formation beneath the external Al2O3 layer was observed in air.
