Abstract

Anisotropic grain growth is of interest for altering the microstructure and improving the properties of oxide ceramics, such as alumina and mullite. The effect of several dopants (at levels from 0.5 to 7 wt. %) on the growth behavior was examined. Anisotropic growth was associated with the additions of SrO, MnO, NiO, Fe2O3 or Y2O3 in mullite and with Na2O, Na3AlF6, or La2O3 in alumina. Fracture surfaces showed predominantly transgranular fracture occurs in all of the compositions indicating strong bonding between the intergranular phase and the matrix. Only modest improvements in toughness were observed.
