Abstract
A symposium was designed for the purpose of educating and developing materials engineer. This symposium consisted of six sessions and was organized into three essential topics: 1)the industrial perspective of what makes a good materials engineer, 2) a historical and philosophical discussion of materials education, and 3) designing curriculum and education methods. In the first topic, it was stressed out that since engineering is not a science, materials engineering is therefore not materials science. Both technical and non-technical knowledge of materials science is essential for the materials engineer. The second session focused on the historical and philosophical perspective to reflect on past and present practices that might serve as a foundation to discuss the future. The last session focused on developing curriculum and education methods to expand the scope of materials education to the general population at the secondary level and even the primary grades.
