Abstract

The effects of diluting Gd with Y on the magnetic properties of the giant magnetocaloric effect material Gd 5Si 2Ge 2 was investigated. It was observed that the dynamic response for Gd 5Si 2Ge 2 at 15 and 150 K consists of two magnetic excitations extending up to 40 meV. Nearly 50 % reduction was showed in the ordering temperature of Gd 5Si 2Ge 2. It was found that the observed magnetic dynamic response for the Gd 4YSi 1.9Ge 2.1 was different from the nondiluted compound and the positions and intensities of the magnetic excitations changed with respect to Gd 5Si 2Ge 2.
