Abstract

SMYS 345 and 420 MPa grade steel plates have been developed for arctic offshore application. Steel compositions were designed to improve fracture toughness of multi-pass welded joints at low temperature. Manufacturing factors such as rolling temperature and finish cooling temperature were precisely controlled to acquire high strength and toughness in base plate with lean alloy contents. Rolling schedule and reduction ratio were controlled to get proper microstructure and good properties in mid-thickness region. And then, steel plates of 100mm thickness were produced and evaluated by API RP 2Z with the third party inspection. It was confirmed that most of properties met the API 2W and API RP 2Z requirements. CTOD values of welded joints exceed 0.54mm for SMYS 345 MPa grade at-40°C.
