Abstract

The neutron spectroscopic measurements of isolated H modes in ice-Ih, ice-II, ice-VIII, and hda-ice are presented. These defect modes are dynamically decoupled from the lattice modes of neighboring atoms, and provide direct information about the local hydrogen and covalent bonds on which the H atom sites. Hence, even a simplified lattice dynamics model in the harmonic approximation can unambiguously yield fundamental information about the stretching/bending bond strengths.
