Abstract

Inelastic neutron scattering (INS) mesurements on CeCoIn 5 were carried out to directly probe the crystalline electric field (CEF) splittings. Peaks were observed in the INS spectra at ∼8 and ∼27 meV with incident neutron energies between E i=30 and 60 meV and at a temperature T=10 K which correspond to transitions from the ground state to the two excited states. It was found that the wave vector and temperature dependence of these peaks were consistent with CEF. It was suggested that the shape of the f orbitals under the influence of the CEF can affect the orbital fluctuations that contribute to superconductivity.
