Abstract
The room-temperature crystalline structure of CaLaBaCu3Ox has been studied by high-resolution neutron powder diffraction. The profile analysis on specimens with oxygen contents x ranging from 6.94 (80 K superconductor) to 6.69 (non-superconductor) indicates that these compounds are isostructural with the non-superconducting tetragonal YBa2Cu3Oy (y<6.4, space group P4/mmm), and that Ca and La atoms occupy the Y and Ba sites of the YBCO structure almost randomly. The changes in bond lengths with x are essentially the same as those of YBa2Cu3Oy. The superconductivity of the system can be understood in terms of the charge transfer between the superconducting CuO2 plane and the basal CuO plane, which would explain the variation of Tc with the change in oxygen content. The similarities and differences between this system and YBa2Cu3Oy are discussed.
