Abstract

Corrosion-resistant oxide coatings are being developed in order to increase the durability of silicon-based structural ceramics in the presence of molten alkali salts. Crystalline mullite (3Al2O3·2SiO2) coatings were deposited onto Si3N4 by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) at 1050 °C. The resultant CVD mullite microstructures were sensitive to SiCl4 precursor concentration and reaction time. Specimens with dense CVD mullite coatings displayed excellent hot corrosion resistance during short-term testing in Na2SO4+O2 at 1000 °C.
