Abstract
Soon to be the world’s most populous country, India is also assuming the mantle of this century’s largest urban transition. Between 2015 and 2050, India’s urban population is projected to increase by 404 million, 30 percent more than China’s projected urban growth and nearly twice that of any other country over the same period (UN DESA 2014). This rapid growth, which has been a well-documented characteristic of India’s largest cities since the country’s independence in 1947, now prevails in India’s smaller urban settlements as well.
