Abstract
The article is a description of corrosion failures in coal liquefaction pilot plants. Most of these failures involve weldments in austenitic stainless steel alloys. The differences in operating conditions between petroleum refineries, on which design of these plants was based, and coal liquefaction processes are discussed. Current research projects aimed at improving the durability of welds in coal liquefaction service are mentioned.
