Abstract

Conical whirl instability of an unloaded rigid rotor supported in a rigidly mounted single hydrodynamic porous journal bearing has been studied theoretically, following Constantinescu's turbulent lubrication theory. The effect of various parameters on the stability of the rotor-bearing system has been investigated. Laminar flow results obtained by the present analysis have been compared with the published results and are found in good agreement.
