Abstract
Monitoring of the health of water-based coolant used formachining requires measurement of various parameters of thecoolant, including refractive index, temperature, pH, andturbidity. One of the primary parameters that is used todetermine the concentration of the coolant is the refractiveindex, which is typically measured manually by an operator atregular intervals during machine operation. This paperdescribes the conceptualization and preliminary design of acoolant health monitoring system that will automaticallymeasure the refractive index of the coolant and will digitize theresulting measurement for communication to a factorysupervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system. Toenable rapid integration into a factory's network architecture, the coolant concentration measurement will be transmitted bythe monitoring system using the MTConnect format. Having anMTConnect-enabled sensor will allow the data to be remotelyaggregated and compared to other machine data to help give abetter understanding of overall machine health. Theeconomical approach to its design allows the coolant healthmonitor to be realizable for both small manufacturingenterprises (SMEs) and large manufacturers alike. Thiswidespread implementation will further benefit industry'smovement toward Internet-of-Things (IoT)-equippedmanufacturing facilities.
